Torpedoed E8 Update
 

Here is some additional information on the E8 that is now at K-25 in Oak Ridge. You Southern RR guys might have to start drooling a bit.:D I've included a picture of the unit in it's glory days prior to being sold to New Jersey Transit.

As some of you already know, former Southern Railway E-8 6913
(former NJT 4334, for our friends in the northeast) has been
purchased by Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Oak Ridge, TN.
The unit arrived in Oak Ridge a couple of days ago after a 10 day
trip over NS from Binghamton, NY.

Among other historical things, the unit was 3rd from the last E-8
built, and 6914 at TVRM is the only one that is left that is newer.
This move means that all 4 remaining SR E-8s are now held for
preservation on "home rails" here in the southeast. It's also
interesting that two units from each order survived, and each pair is
sequencially numbered; 6900,6901 and 6913,6914.

We are looking for volunteers interested in working on the
restoration of 6913 (or our fleet of vintage Southern passenger cars
or operating the excursion train, or...........) in the near future.
I also think it is important to acknowledge the assistance of MANY
fine folks at Norfolk Southern Corp. for helping make this move
possible. Also, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Vintage
Locomotives Inc. for stepping in to save this unit when scrapping
was looking very likely.

The unit was parked running, but that was a long time ago. Both
motors still bar over and plans are to restore to operation for use
on the Secret City Scenic excursion train in Oak Ridge. Finally,
and most importantly, it will be restored to the Black tuxedo it
wore for so many years.

P.S. The funds raised from Horn Honk in Oak Ridge helps SARM
preserve equipment that ultimately gets used at the Honk. While the
E-8 won't be available for honking duty for several years, it's a
good example of what we do with the monies we bring in, including
the $$$ from the honk. We appreciate everyone who participates, and
look forward to seeing everyone in September.

I think it looks a little bit better in the SRR Crescent scheme..... If I remember correctly I have seen a Milwaukee Road F unit sitting down there some where too?
Now the museum just needs to build a facility and such.
The locomotive that is really a shame is the SRR G class 2-8-0 in the fairgrounds in knoxville....
Do you know how TVRM is coming with the SRR # 630 restoration ?

The F7-A you are refereing to is indeed a Milwaukee unit. There is also an FP-7 that I havn't looked into the history of. There are pictures that Charlie Womac posted of these units on an old thread under this forum category titled "SARM 'F' Units at ETTP" dated 11/7/05 that I started.

I think this would be a great volunteer opportunity for you and our club to get involved with SARMs restoration projects.:)
